Products & Investments

We build productsand invest in tools businesses need today.

Media Matters builds and runs its own products, and backs founder-led businesses that are already winning without outside money. Operators on both sides of the table.

Who we are

Operators, not consultants for hire.

Media Matters does two things. We build and operate our own products, and we back a small number of founder-led businesses each year. We are not an agency and we do not sell hours: we take a hard problem, build the software that solves it, and run it as a business with real customers and real revenue.

We are founder-led and self-funded, which shapes everything. We answer to the market rather than a roadmap set elsewhere, and we only build things we are prepared to run ourselves. We move fast and we do not take ourselves too seriously, but we are deadly serious about the work. The two are not in tension.

We build for how people actually behave, not how a pitch deck wishes they would. In practice that means WhatsApp first: we meet customers in the app they already have open, in the language and channels they already use, rather than asking them to come to us.

Track record

We have built and exited at scale before.

The founders previously built Quench and sold it to The Foschini Group, one of the largest retailers listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. We have taken a product from an idea to an acquisition by a listed company.

The same team now builds products and backs founders under Media Matters, putting what an exit teaches you to work on both sides of the table.

Deep domain experience

Between us we have taken a product from an idea to an acquisition by a JSE-listed group, shipped production software for three decades, led enterprise sales for multinationals, and held operating and growth roles inside US-based AI companies. The breadth is the point: we have seen how software gets built, sold, scaled and exited, across very different industries.

How we build

Built, shipped, and operated.

We are not running experiments. We build products that people rely on, put them in the market, and take responsibility for keeping them useful.

Technology that earns its place

We use AI where it genuinely makes a product better, not as a label. Some of what we build leans on it heavily and some not at all. The only test is whether it helps the people using the product.

Built for how people actually behave

For most of the businesses we back, that means WhatsApp first. We meet customers in the channel they already live in, rather than betting a business on getting them to adopt a new one.

Real products, real users, real revenue

Prototypes prove nothing. We measure ourselves on software that is live, used daily, and paid for. The bar is production, not a demo.

Shipped fast, then operated

We move quickly to get something real in front of customers, then we run it. Operating our own products is what tells us the truth about them.
